This object measured in at 154cm- my height. It was suspended from a wall. I was trying to capture the stress of a bad sleep. The object was made with scraps of Semester 1 research, and disgarded prints and papers. An essay to accompany the rings:

I was drawn to explore techniques used by the Surrealists, to create imagery unimaginable by one person only. Surrealist games, in particular 'The Exquisite Corpse' were of interest to me, with the main outcome of the games being collective assemblage, it seemed like an interesting way to develop imagery for designing my works. I like the idea of the interactive and delving into the imaginations of several to create singular outcomes- for example Rene Magritte, Collective Invention, 1935. Researching this technique further, found theories that explored the idea of the games being linked to the mind, dreaming, desire and even humour, some concepts I am drawn to. Making work that repines to dream states and the exploration of the subconscious is something I have briefly touched on and would like to continue to consider.

I administered several games of my version of Exquisite Corpse by asking friends, classmates, colleagues and even an unsuspecting bartenders to take part. I began some games myself, with my own linework or asked participants to just draw whatever they felt: a pattern, an imagine or even a few lines. The only constraint was that it had to fit within the folded panel, flow onto the next or respond to the lines supplied from the previous participant. The request often frightened people as they felt put on the spot or overwhelmed. Tentatively they would partake and nervously hand the paper back, refolded with their mark that was now part of a work in progress.

I personally enjoyed the light-hearted and playful nature of the imagery that tended to be conjured by individuals when asked to draw on a whim, responding only to the hint of what came before. Through administering these games I gathered a strong collection of line work, which was that cut, rearranged and collaged to develop design ideas. It was no up to me to turn the two-dimensional line work into 3-dimensional form; to craft the adornment and make it wearable. A task in itself.

The entire process was exciting and challenging. Translating someone else's linework into my own visual language was difficult, but overall I found that the outcomes of the collaborative imagination to be limitless. It will always allow for inventiveness, variety and originality and will always perplex someone, even if it's just myself as the administrator, translator, maker.
